How to prune a spirea bush

A guide to getting the best from your spirea

Spirea bushes are a favored element in gardens and are available in numerous varieties. These shrubs bloom either in the spring or mid-summer, depending on the specific species. To achieve optimal flowering, it is advisable to perform a renewal prune on your spirea. There is no need to worry about harming your shrub; it will regenerate in time for the upcoming season. Depending on the type of spirea you have, you may also lightly shear the stems to encourage a second wave of blooms.

How should I prune a spirea bush?

This plant is quite popular in landscapes, and we frequently receive inquiries regarding the correct pruning techniques. There are various types of spirea; some bloom in the summer while others do so in the spring. The one we are discussing here is spirea bumalda, which flowers in the summer. Therefore, the procedure I will demonstrate can be applied to this particular plant. It is essential to verify the cultivar of your plant species before proceeding with this method. If you prune the spring-flowering variety, you will inadvertently remove all the potential flowers.

Renewal Pruning

For this shrub, we will be conducting a renewal pruning to enhance blooming and manage its size slightly. This shrub will reach its current size by mid-summer and will also produce flowers. Engaging in this process will not harm the plant. Additionally, once it has finished flowering this summer, you can return to lightly shear it, resulting in more blooms for a second flowering period. Before we begin, I would like to emphasize that this task should be performed early in the season, prior to the bud break on the plant. Delaying too long may cause you to miss the optimal window for proper execution. Now, let us proceed.

Prune Near Base

Our approach would usually involve using pruners to make cuts near the base of the plant, approximately 6 inches above the ground. You need not be overly concerned about the exact location of your cuts, as this plant will regrow. During this process, it is important to remove any dead wood through out the entire shrub.

By pruning a spirea bush early in the season, you only need to prune it once a year
