Hedge trimming and pruning Nanaimo

Creative By Design provides residential hedge trimming and pruning services throughout Nanaimo. You can have your established hedges and shrubs trimmed, pruned and shaped to control their height and width, improve their appearance and keep them manageable as they grow.

Whether you have cedar hedges, laurel hedges or other common residential hedging and shrubs, the amount of trimming your hedge needs depends on its age, size and condition. Your newer hedges can be trimmed to encourage dense growth, established hedges can be maintained at their existing size, and overgrown hedges can be pruned where the condition of the plants allows them to be reduced safely.

Before your hedge is trimmed, we assess its type, height, width, condition and access to determine how much growth can reasonably be removed. Your hedge may be better suited to regular trimming with hedge trimmers or more selective pruning by hand.

Your hedge service can include trimming, pruning, shaping, height and width control, cleanup and debris removal. If you need a new hedge, we can also prepare and plant it for you, with ongoing hedge care available as part of our garden maintenance services.

When Should You Have Your Hedge Trimmed?

March through June is a good time to have the previous year’s growth trimmed and pruned from your hedge. This gives your hedge time to produce new growth after it has been cut.

You should generally avoid heavy pruning during hot summer weather. Removing too much exterior growth can suddenly expose previously shaded foliage to strong sunlight.

Regular light trimming will usually make your hedge easier to maintain than allowing it to become substantially oversized and then trying to cut it back heavily.

Some shrubs do not respond well when they are cut deeply into old bare wood, so keeping your hedge reasonably close to its desired size from an early age makes long-term maintenance considerably easier.

How Much Does Hedge Trimming Cost in Nanaimo?

Our hedge trimming rate is $85 per hour.
We currently have an $800 minimum job size, including travel and debris disposal.
For shrub and hedge trimming work requiring an on-site quote, the consultation is $85. If you proceed with the quoted work, that amount is deducted from your final bill.
We trim and maintain residential hedges and smaller trees up to approximately 15 ft tall. If your trees are above that height, we recommend using a professional tree service.
The cost of trimming your hedge depends on its height, length, width, condition, accessibility, the amount of pruning required and the volume of material that needs to be removed and disposed of.

How Do We Trim and Prune Hedges?

We choose the trimming or pruning method based on the type and condition of the hedge and the result the homeowner wants.

For larger established hedges, we can use powered hedge trimmers to control the height and width and create an even finished shape. Where shrubs or hedges need more selective work, we can prune individual branches by hand rather than simply shearing the outside growth.

We generally shape hedges so the top remains slightly narrower than the bottom. This allows more light to reach the lower growth and helps prevent the hedge from becoming thin underneath while becoming excessively wide at the top.

We also consider how much growth can safely be removed. Some overgrown hedges can be reduced considerably, while others — particularly cedars — should not be cut deeply into old bare wood because they may not produce new growth from those areas.

When Should You Trim Your Cedar Hedge?

For your cedar hedge, March through June is a good time for the main trimming and pruning of the previous year’s growth. This gives your hedge time to produce new growth after it has been cut.

Regular light trimming is generally better for your cedar hedge than allowing it to become substantially oversized and then attempting to cut it back heavily.

You should avoid heavy pruning during hot summer weather because removing too much exterior growth can suddenly expose previously shaded foliage to strong sunlight.

Regular trimming also makes it easier to keep your cedar hedge close to its intended height and width without having to cut deeply into older growth.

Can Your Overgrown Hedge Be Pruned?

Yes, although how far your overgrown hedge can be reduced depends on the plant and its condition.

Before pruning, we assess your hedge’s existing growth to determine whether it can be reduced while retaining enough healthy foliage to recover properly.

If you have a deciduous hedge or shrub, more substantial renovation pruning may be possible. Your cedar hedge requires greater care because cutting deeply into old bare wood can leave permanent gaps.

If your hedge has simply become too tall or wide for its location, we can discuss whether gradual pruning, heavier renovation or replacement is the most practical option.

When Should You First Trim a New Hedge?

You don’t necessarily need to wait until your new hedge reaches its final height before beginning to trim it.
Light trimming while your hedge is young can encourage branching and denser growth. This is particularly useful if you’re growing a privacy hedge, where developing thickness throughout the hedge is just as important as gaining height.
As your hedge becomes established, we can continue trimming the sides and controlling the upper growth to develop your desired height, width and shape.

Can You Have a New Hedge Planted?

Yes. You can have a new residential hedge prepared and planted by Creative By Design in Nanaimo.
We can help you select hedging plants based on the amount of privacy you want, the space available, sunlight, soil conditions and the eventual height and width of your hedge.
For your new hedge, we prepare the planting area, position and space the plants, improve the soil where required, plant and water the hedge and install mulch when appropriate.
Cedar remains one of the most popular choices for privacy hedging on Vancouver Island because our coastal climate suits it well. Western red cedar can form a dense screen, while narrower varieties such as Emerald and Pyramidal cedar can work well if you have less room available.
The spacing for your hedge depends on the species, starting size and how quickly you want it to fill in.

How Should You Care for a Newly Planted Hedge?

After planting, we thoroughly water your new hedge to settle the soil around the roots.
Your new hedge needs consistent moisture while its root system establishes, particularly during dry summer weather. Mulch can help conserve soil moisture and moderate soil temperature while also reducing weed growth around your plants.
As your hedge establishes, we can begin light trimming and shaping where appropriate to encourage dense, controlled growth rather than allowing the individual plants to simply grow upward.
You can also include hedge care as part of your regular garden maintenance when you need ongoing pruning, weeding, fertilizing or seasonal garden work.

Why Choose Creative By Design for Hedge Trimming?

Creative By Design has more than 20 years of landscaping and horticultural experience.
When your hedge needs trimming or pruning, the appropriate approach depends on the species, age and condition of the plant. Different hedges and shrubs respond differently to pruning, and the amount that can safely be removed varies from plant to plant.
We bring the tools required for your work, trim or prune your hedge according to its needs and remove the resulting hedge debris as part of quoted trimming jobs.
Whether you need an established hedge brought back under control, regular trimming to maintain its size or a new privacy hedge planted, we can assess your property and recommend a practical approach.
